External hard drives are the one place this week where Amazon.ca's drive prices sometimes drop below a bare NAS drive of the same size, which is why shucking comes up; the table notes which units contain a drive and what that costs you in warranty.

Questions about External Hard Drive deals
Which external drives here are shuckable?
The desktop Seagate Expansion and WD Elements units contain a standard 3.5-inch SATA drive, which is what shuckers remove. The 2TB Seagate Portable uses a 2.5-inch drive that is not suited to a NAS.
Does shucking void the warranty in Canada?
The warranty covers the external product as sold. Opening the enclosure can void it, and a warranty claim for the bare drive inside is usually refused, so treat a shucked drive as having no warranty path.
Is the drive inside a desktop external drive CMR?
Not guaranteed. The model inside can change between batches, so check the drive's model number against the maker's CMR list before using it in RAID.
Is an external drive a good NAS backup?
Yes, a USB drive plugged into the NAS is the simplest second copy. Keep it disconnected or off-site between backups so one event cannot take both copies.
