Does QNAP support SHR-like flexible RAID?

What QNAP does instead

QNAP uses standard RAID levels (RAID 1/5/6/10, plus RAID 50/60 on larger units). In a classic RAID array with mismatched drives, the array sizes to the smallest drive and the extra capacity on larger drives goes unused — the limitation SHR was built to avoid.

QNAP's flexibility comes from a different direction:

• Storage pools: combine one or more RAID groups into a pool, then carve multiple volumes from it.
• Thin provisioning: allocate volume space on demand rather than up front.
• Multiple pools: group like-sized drives into separate pools so no capacity is stranded, instead of forcing everything into one mismatched array.

Practical takeaway

If you want to mix odd drive sizes in a single efficient array, Synology SHR does that natively and QNAP does not. If you buy drives in matched sets — which is good practice anyway — QNAP's standard RAID plus storage pools gives you plenty of flexibility with no efficiency penalty.
