How do I run a SMART test on a Synology NAS?

Synology exposes SMART testing through Storage Manager, and it is worth running periodically and whenever a drive looks suspect.

Running a test

1. Open Storage Manager in DSM.
2. Go to the HDD/SSD section and select the drive you want to check.
3. Open its Health Info, then the S.M.A.R.T. Test tab.
4. Choose Quick Test (a few minutes, basic checks) or Extended Test (a full surface scan, hours on a large drive).
5. Start the test and let it run; the result shows as passed or failed with details.

Quick vs Extended

A Quick test checks the drive electronics and a sample of the surface — fast, but it can miss localized bad sectors. An Extended test reads the entire surface and is what you want when diagnosing pending or reallocated sectors, or vetting a new drive. It is slow but thorough.

Schedule it

Storage Manager lets you schedule SMART tests (for example a monthly extended test) so drive health is checked automatically. Combined with Synology's health notifications, that gives you early warning before a drive fails. Review the results alongside the Reallocated and Current Pending Sector counts.

If a test fails or sector counts climb, replace the drive; the table lists CMR NAS drives.
