Best M.2 NVMe for the Minisforum N5 Pro

In short

On the Minisforum N5 Pro, NVMe is where the AI models belong: its 3 SSD slots run at PCIe 4.0 ×1 to ×2, so put the model library on the ×2 slot, and two of them take enterprise U.2 drives up to 15 TB. A model loads in seconds from NVMe and in minutes from the hard drives, but once loaded it runs from RAM, so the SSD speeds up loading, not chatting. Minisforum locks no NVMe brand; any PCIe 4.0 drive with a real endurance rating works.

M.2 NVMe for the N5 Pro, from Amazon.ca

Fit not confirmed by Minisforum

Physical fit for the N5 Pro: an M.2 2280 NVMe drive in its 3 M.2 slots. Every drive below matches that. Minisforum does not publish enough to confirm any of these for the N5 Pro (Minisforum does not publish the M.2 slot length), so none is listed as compatible. Check the part against your unit, or Minisforum’s support, before buying.

How we check fit, and what Minisforum publishes for the N5 Pro: N5 Pro compatible drives and fit rules.

Keep AI models on NVMe, not on the drive pool

A local AI server reads the whole model from disk every time it loads one: at start-up, after a reboot, whenever you switch models. From the hard drive pool that is slow. RunAIHome estimates a 40 GB model takes 5 to 8 minutes to load from a hard drive, 70 to 90 seconds from a SATA SSD and 10 to 15 seconds from PCIe 4.0 NVMe, and cites a measured benchmark of 70-plus seconds on SATA against under 15 seconds on Gen 4 NVMe (RunAIHome, May 2026). Once a model is loaded it runs from RAM, so the drive changes how long you wait for the first word, not how fast the chat goes. On the N5 Pro chat speed is set by memory bandwidth: Llama 3.1 8B runs at 4.9 to 8.2 tok/s as shipped, whichever drive it loaded from.

The N5 Pro’s SSD slots, and what each is good for

Here the slots matter more than the drive. Minisforum wires them at PCIe 4.0 ×1 and ×2, not the ×4 a desktop gives an NVMe drive, so even a fast Gen 4 SSD is capped by the link: about 2.0 GB/s on a ×1 slot and 3.9 GB/s on the ×2 slot (theoretical, from the PCIe 4.0 line rate). That is still many times a hard drive. Put the model library on the ×2 slot, and use the ×1 slots for the OS, containers or a cache.

U.2/M.2 slot BU.2 or M.2 2280/22110 NVMe, up to 15 TBPCIe 4.0 ×23.9 GB/s10 s11 s

Load times are theoretical minimums (model size divided by the link’s maximum), before runtime overhead; real loads take longer. Llama 3.3 70B (43 GB) is the largest model on our list the N5 Pro runs comfortably at 96 GB.

How much NVMe for a model library

Everything on our list the N5 Pro can run comfortably at 96 GB comes to 148 GB: Llama 3.3 70B, Qwen3 32B, Qwen3 30B-A3B, Gemma 3 27B, gpt-oss 20B, Qwen3 14B, Gemma 3 12B, Qwen3 8B, Llama 3.1 8B, Gemma 3 4B, Qwen3 4B, Llama 3.2 3B. An everyday set of four is 18 GB. Models come in new versions and several quantizations, so budget about twice what you keep: a 500 GB drive is the sensible size for the N5 Pro’s model library.

U.2: the N5 Pro’s differentiator

Two of the N5 Pro’s three SSD slots take U.2 drives through the adapter Minisforum includes, at up to 15 TB each against 8 TB for the plain M.2 slot. U.2 is the 2.5-inch enterprise form of NVMe: the same protocol as an M.2 stick, but in a thicker drive built for servers, with more capacity and far higher write endurance. It is worth it when the library or a fast pool outgrows 8 TB, or when the drive will take heavy writes (a VM or container pool, a Frigate recording cache). Enterprise U.2 drives are often sold refurbished from data centres; check the remaining endurance before you buy. For a model library under 2 TB, an ordinary M.2 drive in the ×2 slot is the simpler choice.

Keep calculating

To see how much capacity is left after parity, the N5 Pro capacity calculator is preset to its 5 bays and RAID types. For the N5 Pro, the wider basics of choosing a drive are in the buying guides, and CMR versus SMR explains why SMR drives do not belong in a RAID array. Frequently asked questions

How many M.2 slots does the N5 Pro have?

3. 1 × M.2 (PCIe 4.0 ×1, up to 8 TB) plus 2 × U.2 or M.2 (PCIe 4.0 ×1 and ×2, up to 15 TB each). Minisforum does not say which slot the 128 GB OS drive occupies.

Is an NVMe cache worth it in the N5 Pro?

Only if you re-read the same data on the N5 Pro: project files, photos, container images. A media library streamed once gains nothing, and with 1 × 10GbE and 1 × 5GbE the link is often the limit before the drive is.

Can I put any NVMe in the N5 Pro?

Minisforum does not say. The N5 Pro has 3 M.2 slots, but Minisforum does not publish the slot length or whether the slots can hold a storage pool rather than a cache, so we do not mark any NVMe drive as a confirmed fit. Check the slot in your unit before buying.

Can I put third-party drives in the N5 Pro?

Yes. Minisforum publishes no drive compatibility list and no brand lock for the N5 Pro, so any CMR NAS drive up to its rated size works.
