Best RAM for the Minisforum N5 Pro
The Minisforum N5 Pro ships with 16 GB of DDR5 SO-DIMM 5600, ECC supported (2 slots) and officially takes 96 GB. What benefits from the upgrade is specific to this box: the AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX PRO 370 (12 cores, 24 threads)'s Radeon graphics run local AI models, and their speed is set by memory bandwidth, so the second stick matters more than the size. Left out as not fitting the N5 Pro: 121 listings (DDR4, UDIMM, 4-module kit, DDR3).
One stick or two: the upgrade that matters for AI
The N5 Pro has two DDR5 SO-DIMM slots at 5600 MT/s. With one stick only one memory channel works, so the chip reads memory at half speed; a matching second stick fills the other channel and doubles bandwidth, and local AI speed with it. For Llama 3.1 8B at Ollama’s default 4k context that is 4.9 to 8.2 tok/s on one 16 GB stick against 9.9 to 16 tok/s on two 8 GB sticks. Capacity decides which models fit; the second stick decides how fast they run. Minisforum does not say whether its 16 GB and 48 GB configurations ship as one stick or two; its 96 GB configuration has to be two 48 GB sticks, because 96 GB is the stated maximum over two slots.
What each RAM size lets the N5 Pro run
| RAM | Largest model that fits comfortably | Its speed, one stick | Its speed, two sticks |
|---|---|---|---|
| 16 GB | Qwen3 14B | 2.7 to 4.5 tok/s | 5.4 to 9.0 tok/s |
| 32 GB | Qwen3 32B | 1.3 to 2.1 tok/s | 2.6 to 4.3 tok/s |
| 48 GB | Qwen3 32B | 1.3 to 2.1 tok/s | 2.6 to 4.3 tok/s |
| 64 GB | Llama 3.3 70B | not possible (max 48 GB per slot) | 1.2 to 2.0 tok/s |
| 96 GB | Llama 3.3 70B | not possible (max 48 GB per slot) | 1.2 to 2.0 tok/s |

Which modules: DDR5 SO-DIMM, ECC optional
The N5 Pro takes 262-pin DDR5 SO-DIMM laptop-style modules, not desktop DIMMs, rated at 5600 MT/s or faster (faster modules run at 5600). It supports ECC, and Minisforum fits ECC memory in its 48 GB and 96 GB configurations, but its 16 GB configuration is sold without the ECC label, so ECC is a choice here, not a requirement. For a box that also holds your only copy of some files, ECC is worth it; for a pure AI and media server, matched non-ECC sticks are fine. Buy two identical sticks so both channels run together. The table below lists DDR5 SO-DIMMs in stock on Amazon.ca; it does not separate ECC from non-ECC, so check the listing.
Keep calculating
To see how much capacity is left after parity, the N5 Pro capacity calculator is preset to its 5 bays and RAID types. For the N5 Pro, the wider basics of choosing a drive are in the buying guides, and CMR versus SMR explains why SMR drives do not belong in a RAID array. Frequently asked questions
What memory does the N5 Pro use?
DDR5 SO-DIMM 5600, ECC supported (2 slots), starting from 16 GB. 96 GB per Minisforum's product page and configurator (one Canadian comparison table says 128 GB). Sold as 16 GB, 48 GB or 96 GB; only the 96 GB configuration (2 × 48 GB) is known to be dual channel. It uses standard non-ECC modules.
Can the N5 Pro's memory be upgraded?
Yes. The N5 Pro has 2 slots, officially to 96 GB.
Is more RAM worth it in the N5 Pro?
Yes, and not only for VMs. On the N5 Pro memory decides how fast a local AI model answers: a second stick fills the second channel and roughly doubles chat speed, and more capacity lets larger models fit. The table above shows what each size runs.
Can I put third-party drives in the N5 Pro?
Yes. Minisforum publishes no drive compatibility list and no brand lock for the N5 Pro, so any CMR NAS drive up to its rated size works.
