In short

Between March and August 2026 the lowest tracked price per terabyte rose 92% for Seagate Barracuda and 15% for Seagate Exos SATA. Consumer lines moved most, enterprise least. The median drive we price on Amazon.com is US$47.66 per TB, read October 15, 2026.

A row with no price is an item we track that has no current Amazon.com offer. We leave it in place rather than hiding it, so you can see the whole set we follow. 10 listings are marked: a seller other than Amazon or the brand asking more than 25% above the cheapest Amazon-sold price at the same capacity. They are shown but not ranked on price, because that is not the same offer.

What changed and why

The cause is not retail demand. It is that the three remaining hard drive makers sold their high-capacity output to datacentre buyers years in advance, and the retail channel is being served with what is left. On its Q4 FY2026 earnings call Seagate described the vast majority of nearline exabytes as allocated into calendar 2028, with product configurations and pricing already contracted through calendar 2027 and customer planning discussions reaching into 2029. Earlier in the year nearline capacity was reported fully booked through 2026. Western Digital has described calendar 2026 as sold out.

The same call gives the clearest measure of what that does to price. Seagate's data-centre revenue grew 57% year over year while the exabytes it shipped grew 43%. A revenue line growing faster than the capacity behind it is price and mix, not volume: the company is selling a similar quantity of storage for materially more money. Management described the gap between supply and demand as wider than a few quarters earlier, and said incremental output was being priced accordingly.

Supply cannot respond quickly. Platter and head capacity takes years to add, and the industry spent the previous decade consolidating rather than expanding, on the assumption that flash would gradually take the low end. Three makers now serve a demand curve that bent upward faster than any of them planned for. Morgan Stanley's June 2026 model puts demand growth at 40 to 50% a year against supply growth of 30 to 35%, and has vendors targeting US$25 to US$30 per terabyte, well above where retail sat in 2025.

That is why the increase is so uneven across the table above. Enterprise nearline lines are sold on long-term agreements that fix a price in advance, so Seagate Exos SATA rose 15%. Lines sold almost entirely through retail have no such protection, and Seagate Barracuda rose 92%, from US$16.25 to US$31.25 per terabyte. The retail channel absorbed the shortage because it was the part of the market with the least contractual cover.

Who it hits, and how hard

Desktop and consumer buyers take the worst of it. Seagate Barracuda nearly doubled per terabyte in five months, and the small capacities moved furthest because their fixed costs were already a large share of the price. A 4 TB desktop drive is now a poor value proposition against an 8 TB one in a way it was not a year ago.

NAS buyers sit in the middle. WD Red Pro and IronWolf Pro rose 66% and 55%. The practical effect is that filling a four-bay enclosure costs noticeably more than it did, and the gap between a NAS-rated drive and a desktop drive narrowed in percentage terms, which makes the NAS drive easier to justify than it used to be.

Enterprise and homelab buyers buying Exos or MG drives saw the smallest increases, because those lines are priced against contracts rather than shelves. If you were already buying enterprise drives for a home array on cost-per-terabyte grounds, that case got stronger, not weaker.

Recertified and shucked drives became relatively more attractive as new prices rose, but both carry caveats. Recertified warranty terms vary far more between sellers than new drives do, and shucking ends the enclosure warranty without giving you a bare-drive one. Price the gap on the day rather than assuming the old rule of thumb still holds.

What to do now

  1. Compare on price per terabyte, not sticker price. Our cost per TB calculator also shows the usable capacity your operating system will report, which is where a 4 TB drive becomes 3.64 TiB.
  2. Buy the larger capacity where the per-terabyte gap is wide, but stop before the rebuild window gets uncomfortable. More data behind one spindle means a longer resilver and a bigger loss if it fails.
  3. Check the recording technology before it goes in an array. Paste the model number into our model number decoder: it reports CMR or SMR where the maker has stated it, and says so plainly when it cannot.
  4. Check the failure rate for the exact model, not the brand. Our failure rate by model table shows the sample size next to every rate, because a rate without one cannot be ranked.
  5. Price shucking honestly before you do it. The shuck savings calculator compares an external against the internal equivalent per terabyte, and we publish no saving we have not measured.
  6. If you are weighing flash instead, check the live gap on our SSD versus hard drive page rather than assuming. Both rose through 2026, so the ratio moved less than either headline.
  7. Do not wait for a better price unless you can wait years. Every dated forecast is on our will prices drop page, and none promises relief soon.

Outlook

Published positions range from analysts expecting improvement during 2027 to Morgan Stanley modelling the shortage running through 2028. Seagate's own allocation statements point the same way: capacity committed into 2028 and pricing contracted through 2027 do not describe a market about to soften.

Questions

Why are hard drives so expensive in 2026?

Because datacentre buyers have bought the output years ahead and retail is served with the remainder. Seagate has described the vast majority of its nearline exabytes as allocated into calendar 2028, with pricing contracted through 2027. Between March and August 2026 the lowest tracked price per terabyte rose 92% for Seagate Barracuda and 15% for Seagate Exos SATA, with the retail-heavy lines moving furthest because they have the least contractual protection.

Which hard drives went up least?

Enterprise nearline lines. Seagate Exos SATA rose 15% against 92% for Seagate Barracuda over the same five months. Those lines are sold under long-term agreements that fix a price in advance, so less of the shortage reached their retail pricing. If you were already buying enterprise drives for a home array on cost-per-terabyte grounds, that case is stronger now than it was.

Is it cheaper per terabyte to buy a bigger drive now?

Yes, and the gap widened through 2026 because the increase fell hardest on small consumer drives, where fixed costs were already a large share of the price. The counterweight has not changed: a larger drive concentrates more data behind a single failure and takes longer to rebuild, so the right capacity is still the one whose rebuild window you are comfortable with rather than simply the largest.

Should I wait for prices to come down?

Not unless you can wait years. No published forecast promises relief before 2027, and Morgan Stanley's model runs the shortage through 2028. Seagate has contracted pricing through calendar 2027 and allocated nearline capacity into 2028, which is not the shape of a market about to soften. If an array is short of space now, the cost of waiting is real and the saving is speculative.

Are recertified drives a good way around this?

They became relatively more attractive as new prices rose, but the discount narrowed at the same time, so the saving is smaller than the old rule of thumb suggests. The bigger variable is warranty: recertified terms differ far more between sellers than new-drive warranties do, and some come from the reseller rather than the manufacturer.
