Annualized Failure Rate by Hard Drive Model, Updated Quarterly
31 drive models met our reporting floor in 2025, out of 50 models present in the data. Rates run from 0.22% to 6.3%, against a fleet-wide 1.36%. Every row shows its drive days and a confidence range, because a rate without a sample size cannot be ranked.

Current prices on Amazon.com: NAS and enterprise drives
New-condition listings only, sorted by price per terabyte. 74 of 106 tracked items have a current offer. 1 is out of stock on Amazon.com but available on Amazon.ca, shown as a secondary line in Canadian dollars. Where the listing states a model number we show it, because that is the part you can check against a datasheet. Prices are read from Amazon.com in US dollars and we earn a commission on qualifying purchases.

A row with no price is an item we track that has no current Amazon.com offer. We leave it in place rather than hiding it, so you can see the whole set we follow. 10 listings are marked: a seller other than Amazon or the brand asking more than 25% above the cheapest Amazon-sold price at the same capacity. They are shown but not ranked on price, because that is not the same offer.

What changed and why
Models with too small a sample to rank
Models below 250 drives or 50,000 drive days are marked: at that sample size one extra failure moves the rate by whole percentage points, so the number is not precise enough to rank on.

Reading this table
Compare the confidence range, not just the rate. Two models at 1.2% and 1.6% whose ranges overlap heavily are not meaningfully different, and treating them as a ranking is reading noise. A model whose range sits entirely above the fleet rate is the one worth paying attention to.
Age matters as much as model. Several of the worst rates in any year belong to drives near the end of a long deployment, where the population is small and old rather than inherently fragile. That is not an argument to ignore a high rate, but it is a reason to check the drive count and the capacity before concluding a model is bad.
Boot devices are excluded. Backblaze runs boot SSDs and small laptop drives alongside its data fleet and the raw snapshots do not label them, so we filter everything below 4 TB. That exclusion is what makes our fleet figure reproduce Backblaze's published rate: the boot devices recorded no failures and only diluted the denominator.
What a failure means in this data
A drive is counted as failed when Backblaze removes it from service because it has stopped working or because its SMART indicators crossed the thresholds they use to retire a drive before it fails outright. That second category matters: a proportion of these failures are drives that were still readable when they were pulled. The rate therefore measures drives that stopped being trustworthy rather than drives that lost data, which is the right measure for anyone running redundancy but a slightly pessimistic one for a single-drive deployment.
It also means the figures reflect one organisation's retirement policy. A more conservative operator would record a higher rate on identical hardware, and a more tolerant one a lower rate. This is a further reason to read the ordering between models rather than treating any absolute percentage as a universal property of the drive.
Who it hits, and how hard
Buyers choosing between two specific models get the most from this table, provided they read the confidence range alongside the rate. Overlapping ranges mean the data cannot separate the drives.
Owners of a model with a high rate should check the drive count and capacity before worrying. Several of the worst rates in any year belong to small, aging populations near the end of a long deployment rather than to inherently fragile drives.
Anyone whose model is absent should not read that as a verdict. Backblaze runs a specific set of high-capacity models bought in bulk; most consumer drives never appear.
Array builders should use the rate to size redundancy rather than to pick a winner. Our MTBF to AFR calculator converts a rate into expected failures across a given drive count.
What to do now
- Find your exact model in the table and read its drive days before its rate.
- Compare confidence ranges rather than headline rates when choosing between two drives.
- Convert the rate into expected failures for your array size with the MTBF to AFR calculator.
- Check recording technology with the model number decoder; SMR in an array is a bigger risk than a small rate difference.
- Read the 2025 annual summary for how these figures are computed.
- Treat a missing model as missing data, not as a good or bad sign.
Outlook
Backblaze publishes quarterly and we re-ingest each period, recomputing rather than copying. The table above covers the most recent annual period; quarterly figures through Q2 2026 are in the database and summarised on our 2025 Drive Stats page.
We make no prediction about future rates. A model's rate in one year is a weak predictor of the next, because the population ages and the fleet mix changes underneath it.
Questions
Why is a model I own missing?
Backblaze only reports drives it actually runs, which is a specific set of high-capacity nearline models bought in bulk for a datacentre. Most consumer drives never appear, nor does any 2.5-inch model, nor the SSDs in consumer machines. A missing model is not a verdict on it, and absence of data is not evidence of a problem. There is simply no comparable open dataset for consumer drives, because no consumer runs enough of them to generate statistically meaningful failure counts. That gap is real and nobody has filled it.
What is the reporting floor and why do you use one?
We mark any model below 250 drives or 50,000 drive days as too small a sample to rank. Below that threshold a single additional failure can move the computed rate by whole percentage points, so publishing it in a ranked list would imply a precision the data does not have. Backblaze applies a similar floor to its own headline table for the same reason. We still show those models, with their drive days visible, because the underlying counts are real and useful; we simply decline to order them against models with thousands of times more observation.
What does the 95% range mean?
It is the interval the true underlying rate most likely falls within, given how many failures were actually observed. We compute it with a normal approximation on the failure count, which is adequate at these sample sizes and is stated so you can judge it. A wide range means few failures were observed, not that the drive is erratic: two failures in a small fleet produce a wide interval even if the drive is perfectly well behaved. Compare intervals rather than point estimates when choosing between models, because heavily overlapping ranges mean the data cannot separate them.
Can I use this to decide between two drives?
Only when their confidence ranges do not overlap. Where the ranges overlap substantially, the data is telling you plainly that it cannot separate the two drives, and treating a small difference in the point estimates as a ranking is reading noise as signal. In that situation decide on the things that are actually known: warranty length, rated workload per year, capacity per dollar, acoustics and whether the drive uses conventional or shingled recording. Those differences are documented by the manufacturer and will affect your experience more than a fraction of a percentage point in a fleet statistic.
How often does this update?
Backblaze publishes quarterly results, with a fuller annual report early in the following year. We re-ingest whenever a new period appears, recomputing from the raw snapshots rather than copying their published table, so the method stays identical across periods and the figures remain comparable. The page's editorial updated date moves only when the figures or the writing actually change, not on every ingest. At the time of writing the most recent published quarter is Q2 2026; a Q3 2026 report does not yet exist and would normally appear in early 2027.
