Are Seagate BarraCuda drives OK for a NAS?
Not recommended. BarraCuda is a desktop drive line, some models are SMR, they lack NAS-oriented firmware and workload ratings, and they are not rated for continuous 24/7 multi-drive operation. For a NAS use Seagate IronWolf (CMR, NAS-rated) instead. A BarraCuda may work briefly but is the wrong tool for RAID.

BarraCuda is Seagate's desktop line, not a NAS drive. It can spin up in a NAS, but it is designed for a single-drive desktop that is powered on intermittently, not a 24/7, multi-drive, vibration-heavy RAID array.
Why it is the wrong drive
- Recording tech: several BarraCuda models are SMR, which behaves badly in RAID rebuilds.
- Workload rating: desktop drives carry much lower annual workload ratings than NAS drives, so continuous use ages them faster.
- No NAS firmware: BarraCuda lacks the vibration tolerance and error-recovery behaviour (TLER-style time-limited error recovery) that keep a drive from being dropped out of an array on a slow sector.
- 24/7 duty: NAS drives are rated for round-the-clock operation; desktop drives are not.
What to use instead
Seagate's NAS line is IronWolf (and IronWolf Pro), which Seagate documents as CMR and rates for NAS workloads and 24/7 operation. It is the direct, correctly-specified alternative. The table lists in-stock IronWolf drives by price per terabyte.
