How loud are NAS hard drives?

Drive noise is real and worth planning for, especially if the NAS lives in a room you use. It comes from two things: spindle whir (constant) and seek chatter (during access), and it scales with drive class.

Roughly quietest to loudest

• 5400-rpm-class NAS drives (many WD Red Plus, standard IronWolf): the quietest mainstream NAS drives, a soft whir, modest seek noise.
• 7200-rpm NAS drives (WD Red Pro, IronWolf Pro, Toshiba N300): noticeably louder, more seek chatter, a bit more vibration.
• Enterprise drives (Seagate Exos, WD Ultrastar): the loudest: audible spindle noise and distinct seek clatter, designed for data centres where noise does not matter.

What adds to it

More drives means more combined noise, and drives can resonate against the chassis. The NAS fan is often as audible as the drives: a quiet-cooling fan profile helps. A NAS on a hard shelf transmits vibration; a little isolation quiets it.

Choosing for your space

For a living room, bedroom or office, prefer 5400-class NAS drives and a quiet fan profile. For a basement, closet or rack, enterprise drives are fine and save money per terabyte: the noise simply does not reach you. The table lists CMR NAS drives; slower NAS-class drives sit at the quieter end.
