What can the TS-233 run?

The TS-233 runs Plex only for direct-play (no hardware transcode), no Docker at all but no virtual machines (ARM). On its ARM Cortex-A55 (4 cores, 2.0 GHz) with 2 GB, the sweet spot is storage and backups. It cannot run Immich, Nextcloud, Frigate and more.

The cheapest QNAP and deliberately modest: an ARM processor, 2 GB of soldered RAM, one gigabit port. The network caps you at about 110 MB/s here, so a faster drive buys no more speed. Buy on noise and price per TB, not on data rate.

App by app on the TS-233

Plex

Plex runs on the TS-233 for direct-play only — the ARM Cortex-A55 (4 cores, 2.0 GHz) is ARM with no hardware transcode. Keep your library in formats your TVs and phones already play, serve it over 1 × 1GbE, and it is a tidy little media box; ask it to convert 4K and it stalls.

Jellyfin

Jellyfin runs in Docker, and the TS-233's QTS 5.2 has no container platform, so it is not a fit here — Plex's native QNAP package is the media route on this model.

Immich

Immich is a multi-container Docker stack, and the TS-233 has no container platform in QTS 5.2, so it is off the table — use QNAP's own photo app instead.

Home Assistant

Home Assistant is light, but the TS-233 has neither Docker nor VM support in QTS 5.2, so neither install path works cleanly — a small always-on mini-PC is the usual host instead.

Nextcloud

Nextcloud needs the container platform the TS-233's QTS 5.2 lacks. For private file sync on this model, QNAP's built-in apps are the practical choice.

Frigate

Frigate decodes every camera stream continuously and detects on each frame — work the TS-233's ARM Cortex-A55 (4 cores, 2.0 GHz) cannot shoulder (ARM, no hardware acceleration). This is not the box for Frigate.

Pi-hole / AdGuard Home

Pi-hole is featherweight, but it still needs the container platform the TS-233's QTS 5.2 does not provide. On this model, network-wide DNS blocking is a job for a Raspberry Pi instead.

Paperless-ngx

Paperless-ngx is a Docker stack the TS-233 cannot host — no container platform in QTS 5.2. A model with Docker is needed for a searchable paper archive.

Vaultwarden

Vaultwarden is tiny but still needs Docker, which the TS-233's QTS 5.2 does not offer. Host your password vault on a model with a container platform.

Minecraft server

A Minecraft world wants RAM and a fast CPU core; the TS-233 has no container platform in QTS 5.2 to run it, so host it elsewhere.

Docker (general)

The TS-233's QTS 5.2 has no container platform, so Docker apps are simply unavailable — the single biggest limit on what this ARM model can run.

Virtual machines

Virtual machines need x86 hardware virtualization; the TS-233's ARM Cortex-A55 (4 cores, 2.0 GHz) is ARM, so it cannot run a VM at all. For a Windows or Linux guest you need an Intel or AMD model.

Surveillance recording

The TS-233 runs QNAP's native camera app for a handful of streams over 1 × 1GbE — enough for a home. Pair its 2 bays with surveillance-tuned drives (WD Purple, SkyHawk) for the constant 24/7 write load.

Time Machine / backup target

Like every NAS, the TS-233 is an excellent Time Machine and backup target over SMB — set a per-user quota so backups do not fill its 2 bays. With 1 × 1GbE it soaks up a household's Macs and PCs effortlessly.

No. The TS-233's ARM CPU cannot hardware-transcode. It direct-plays files your devices already support, but 4K transcoding needs an Intel Quick Sync NAS.
