The best AI NAS in Canada
The best AI NAS for most Canadians is the Minisforum N5 Pro, which runs an everyday 8B chatbot at 4.9 to 8.2 tok/s as shipped and roughly twice that with a second RAM stick. We rank AI NAS units by the memory bandwidth and RAM that decide local AI speed, not by NPU TOPS, and only pick what you can actually buy here. Everything runs on your own hardware, so your prompts and files stay private.

Our picks by use case
Minisforum N5 Pro
Five bays, ECC support, a Radeon 890M the chat runtimes can use, and two DDR5 slots up to 96 GB. It is a real NAS first and a capable AI box second, and it is sold through Minisforum's Canadian store.
- Calculator verdict: Llama 3.1 8B at Ollama's default 4k context: 4.9 to 8.2 tok/s as shipped (medium confidence). The largest model we would run day to day on the Minisforum N5 Pro is Gemma 3 4B (7.7 to 13 tok/s).
- RAM: 16 GB DDR5 SO-DIMM (ECC support), up to 96 GB. Best upgrade: a matching second RAM stick. It fills the empty memory channel, so chat speed rises about 2x, and doubles memory to 32 GB. That is enough for Qwen3 30B-A3B.
- AI photo and camera: GPU-accelerated through ROCm (experimental in Immich); ROCm on the AMD iGPU (unofficial in Frigate, works on most).

- 16 GB (one stick assumed): 4.9 to 8.2 tok/s · CA$1,620.90, in stock when checked Sep 30, 2026
- 48 GB (one stick assumed): 4.9 to 8.2 tok/s · CA$2,004.90, out of stock when checked Sep 30, 2026
- 96 GB (2 x 48 GB, dual channel): 9.9 to 16 tok/s · CA$2,409.90, out of stock when checked Sep 30, 2026

Minisforum N5 AIR
The same two-slot DDR5-5600 memory system as the N5 Pro, which is what sets chat speed, for considerably less (compare the prices below). You give up ECC and the NPU, neither of which a chatbot uses.
- Calculator verdict: Llama 3.1 8B at Ollama's default 4k context: 4.9 to 8.2 tok/s as shipped (medium confidence). The largest model we would run day to day on the Minisforum N5 AIR is Gemma 3 4B (7.7 to 13 tok/s).
- RAM: 16 GB DDR5 SO-DIMM (non-ECC), up to 96 GB.

Minisforum N5 MAX
The only box here with 256-bit memory. That bandwidth is what makes 32B and 70B models usable at home, and 64 GB of unified memory holds them. The memory is soldered, so choose the size at purchase.
- Calculator verdict: Llama 3.1 8B at Ollama's default 4k context: 28 to 47 tok/s as shipped (high confidence). The largest model we would run day to day on the Minisforum N5 MAX is Qwen3 32B (7.3 to 12 tok/s).
- RAM: 64 GB LPDDR5x unified memory (256-bit) (soldered). The memory is soldered, so the only real upgrade for local AI is a stronger box.
- AI photo and camera: GPU-accelerated through ROCm (experimental in Immich); ROCm on the AMD iGPU (unofficial in Frigate, works on most).

UGREEN NASync iDX6011 Pro
The most complete AI-first NAS: a Core Ultra 7, 64 GB of LPDDR5X and UGREEN's AI software in a six-bay box. We found no Canadian offer for it (not on Amazon.ca or UGREEN's Canadian stores when checked); UGREEN sells its one 64 GB configuration on Amazon US and its own US store at US$5,999.99.
- Calculator verdict: Llama 3.1 8B at Ollama's default 4k context: 3.7 to 20 tok/s as shipped (low confidence). The largest model we would run day to day on the UGREEN NASync iDX6011 Pro is Qwen3 30B-A3B (5.9 to 31 tok/s).
- RAM: 64 GB LPDDR5X (soldered). The memory is soldered, so the only real upgrade for local AI is a stronger box.
- AI photo and camera: iGPU-accelerated through OpenVINO (Iris Xe/Arc, as Immich documents); hardware detection on the Intel iGPU via OpenVINO.

Synology DiskStation DS925+
Keep it for storage. A DS925+ ships with 4 GB, and Synology publishes no memory speed for its Ryzen, so it is not an AI box. Add a cheap AI box such as the N5 AIR and point Open WebUI (or Synology's AI Console, which accepts OpenAI-compatible APIs) at it.
- Calculator verdict: Llama 3.1 8B does not fit in the 4 GB it ships with; at 32 GB it does. As shipped, no model in our list fits the Synology DiskStation DS925+ comfortably.
- RAM: 4 GB DDR4 ECC, up to 32 GB. Best upgrade: a matching second RAM stick. It fills the empty memory channel and doubles memory to 8 GB. That is enough for Gemma 3 4B. Going all the way to 32 GB fits models up to Qwen3 32B.
- AI photo and camera: CPU only: works, but indexing a large library is slow; CPU detection is not recommended; add a USB or M.2 accelerator.

How we picked
Every pick went through our AI NAS calculator, which estimates chat speed from memory bandwidth and checks whether a model fits in free RAM. Its constants were set from published measurements on the Ryzen AI Max+ 395, and on every build it is re-checked against an independent measurement on a Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 (the chip in the N5 Pro), where it lands within 3%. Intel-based AI NAS units have no published LLM measurements yet, so their ranges are wider, and that is a reason we did not pick one as the overall winner.
We then kept only what you can buy from Canada: on Amazon.ca, on Amazon.com with the cross-border costs spelled out, or direct from the maker’s Canadian store. Availability changes, so each price shows the date we checked it, and the Canadian availability tracker lists every AI NAS we follow.
What to check before you buy
- How the RAM ships. A two-slot NAS with one stick runs AI at half speed. Budget for a matching second stick.
- Soldered or not. Soldered memory is fast but final. Buy the size you will want in three years.
- Local or cloud. Some NAS AI features call cloud providers. If privacy is the point, check where each feature runs (see our AI NAS guide).
- What you will run. Chat needs bandwidth; photo search and camera detection benefit from an NPU or iGPU. See the best NAS for Ollama for chat alone.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best AI NAS in Canada?
For most people, the Minisforum N5 Pro with both RAM slots filled: a proper five-bay NAS that runs an 8B chatbot at a comfortable reading speed. For large models, the N5 MAX is the only NAS sold in Canada with the 256-bit memory 70B models need.
Is the UGREEN iDX6011 Pro sold in Canada?
Not when we checked: neither UGREEN's Canadian NAS store nor its general Canadian store listed any iDX model. UGREEN sells it on Amazon US and its own US store at US$5,999.99, shipped from the US with duty and shipping extra. Our availability tracker updates when a Canadian listing appears.
Can I buy a Zettlab AI NAS in Canada?
No. Zettlab's shipping policy lists the United States, Australia and Singapore only, and its checkout offers no Canadian option. The D4 and D6 also run their AI Q&A on your PC rather than the NAS, per Zettlab's own comparison table.
Does the NPU matter when choosing an AI NAS?
For chatbots, no: Ollama does not use NPUs, and the N5 Pro and N5 MAX have the same 50 TOPS NPU yet the MAX chats about three times faster. NPUs help with camera detection and some photo search.
Should I buy an AI NAS or a mini PC for local AI?
If you need new storage anyway, an AI NAS does both jobs. If your NAS is fine, a Ryzen mini PC running Ollama is usually the cheaper way to fast local chat, and the NAS keeps the files.
