Seagate vs Western Digital vs Toshiba: Which Drives Fail Least?
Weighted by drive days across 2025, Western Digital recorded the lowest rate at 0.64% and HGST the highest at 2.89%, against a fleet-wide 1.36%. The gap between makers is smaller than the gap between the best and worst individual models, which is the more useful comparison.

A row with no price is an item we track that has no current Amazon.com offer. We leave it in place rather than hiding it, so you can see the whole set we follow. 10 listings are marked: a seller other than Amazon or the brand asking more than 25% above the cheapest Amazon-sold price at the same capacity. They are shown but not ranked on price, because that is not the same offer.
Failure rate by maker, weighted by drive days
| Maker | Models | Drive days | Failures | AFR, drive-day weighted |

| Western Digital | 5 | 27,554,022 | 481 | 0.64% |
| Toshiba | 9 | 38,001,971 | 1,301 | 1.25% |
| Seagate | 25 | 40,058,013 | 1,730 | 1.58% |
| HGST | 10 | 10,266,634 | 813 | 2.89% |
What changed and why
Brands we will not rank
A brand needs a real population before its rate means anything. Every maker in this period cleared our floor of 500,000 drive days. A zero percent rate over a few drive-years is an absence of evidence, not a result, and leading a brand comparison with one would be the exact error the rest of this page warns about.
Why these are weighted by drive days
Averaging each maker's model rates would let a model with 300 drives count as much as one with 60,000. That single choice is how the same dataset gets used to argue opposite conclusions about the same brands. Weighting by drive days asks a different and more answerable question: across all the running time Backblaze logged for this maker, what share of drives failed per year.
Boot devices are not counted
Backblaze runs boot SSDs and small laptop drives alongside its data fleet. They are not hard drives and they are not what this page is about, so everything below 4 TB is excluded. That exclusion is what makes our fleet figure reproduce Backblaze's published rate: including the boot devices only dilutes the denominator, because none of the year's failures were theirs.
What this comparison cannot tell you
Backblaze does not buy an even spread of models across makers. In any given year one maker may be represented mostly by a recent, well-behaved high-capacity line and another by an aging deployment bought years earlier. The brand totals carry that mix with them, and no weighting fixes it.
Treat the per-model table as the real result and the brand totals as context. A maker with a good overall figure still sells models with poor rates, and the model number is what you actually buy. Our rate by model page has that breakdown.
Who it hits, and how hard
Anyone shopping by brand is using the weakest signal available here. The spread inside each maker's range is wider than the gap between makers, and you buy a model number.
Fleet operators buying in volume get more from this view, because they are genuinely exposed to a maker's whole range rather than to one drive.
Anyone citing a brand verdict from this or any other dataset should state the weighting. Averaging model rates instead of weighting by drive days produces a different answer from the same numbers, which is how this dataset ends up supporting opposite conclusions.
Owners of an HGST drive should note that those are a distinct and generally older population rather than current Western Digital products, which is why they are listed separately.
What to do now
- Start from the per-model table, not this one; the model is what you buy.
- Check the drive days column here before treating any brand figure as meaningful.
- Read how the rates are computed on our 2025 Drive Stats page.
- Confirm recording technology for the specific model with the decoder.
- Size redundancy from the rate with the MTBF to AFR calculator.
- Ignore brand loyalty arguments that do not state a weighting and a sample size.
Outlook
Brand composition changes as Backblaze buys. A maker that looks good in one year may be represented mostly by a recent, well-behaved line, and a maker that looks poor may be carrying an aging deployment bought years earlier. No weighting fixes that, so treat the brand totals as context and the per-model table as the result.
We make no prediction about future rates by maker.
Questions
Which hard drive brand is most reliable?
On this data, the differences between makers are smaller than the differences between individual models within each maker. That makes a brand-level answer much less useful than it sounds, because you buy a model number rather than a brand, and the spread inside any one maker's range is wider than the gap between makers. A maker with a good overall figure still sells models with poor rates, and the reverse is equally true. Use the per-model table to choose, and treat the brand totals here as context for how the fleet is composed rather than as a shopping recommendation.
Why does HGST appear separately from Western Digital?
Western Digital acquired HGST years ago, but the drives Backblaze runs under HGST model numbers are a distinct and generally older population than its current Western Digital products. Merging the two would hide which drives the figures actually describe, and would flatter or penalise the Western Digital line depending on how the older cohort happened to be ageing that year. Keeping them separate is less tidy but more honest about what is being measured. If you are buying a new drive today, the HGST row is a historical record rather than a guide to what you would receive.
Is Toshiba really worse, as some analyses claim?
Published comparisons disagree for two reasons that have nothing to do with the drives: they weight differently, and they cover different periods. Averaging each maker's model rates gives a different answer from weighting by drive days, and the same dataset therefore supports opposite conclusions depending on which choice an author made. What this page can say is what its own table shows, computed one way and stated plainly so you can check it. Any brand-level figure also depends heavily on which models that maker happened to supply in bulk during the period, which is not a property of the maker's engineering.
Does this reflect consumer drives?
No, and the gap is larger than people assume. These are high-capacity nearline models bought in bulk for datacentre use. The consumer lines from the same makers are different products with different platters, different firmware, different vibration tolerance and different warranty terms. No dataset of comparable quality exists for consumer drives, because no individual runs enough of them to produce meaningful failure counts and no manufacturer publishes the data. Treating a nearline result as a consumer verdict is the most common misuse of this dataset, and it is worth resisting even when the model numbers look similar.
Why not just rank by the headline number?
Because the headline number is a mix rather than a measurement of the maker. It is driven by which models happen to be in the fleet during the period and how old they are, at least as much as by anything the manufacturer did differently. A maker represented mostly by a recent, well-behaved high-capacity line will look better than one carrying an ageing deployment bought years earlier, regardless of engineering quality. The per-model table, with its drive days and confidence ranges visible, is the honest version of this comparison, and it is the one we would use ourselves when buying.
