A row with no price is an item we track that has no current Amazon.com offer. We leave it in place rather than hiding it, so you can see the whole set we follow. 10 listings are marked: a seller other than Amazon or the brand asking more than 25% above the cheapest Amazon-sold price at the same capacity. They are shown but not ranked on price, because that is not the same offer.

What changed and why
Backblaze publishes raw daily snapshots, one row per drive per day, and no summary dataset. We streamed every daily file for the four quarters of 2025 and counted, per model, the number of rows (drive days), the number of rows flagged as a failure, and the fleet size on the last day of the period. The rate is then failures divided by drive days times 365, expressed as a percentage. We do not copy the published figure, so the arithmetic above can be checked against the same public files.
Models below 250 drives or 50,000 drive days are marked: at that sample size one extra failure moves the rate by whole percentage points, so the number is not precise enough to rank on.
Has it moved since the annual report?
The 2025 annual figure is the headline, but quarters published since it are ingested the same way and computed with the same arithmetic. Each quarterly rate covers three months, so it moves around far more than an annual figure does.
| Period | Drives | Drive days | Failures | AFR |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2025 annual | 334,844 | 115,936,784 | 4,327 | 1.36% |
| 2026 Q1 quarter | 341,746 | 30,243,301 | 1,030 | 1.24% |
| 2026 Q2 quarter | 351,348 | 31,613,498 | 1,522 | 1.76% |
What a low AFR does and does not tell you
These drives run in a datacentre: constant temperature, constant power, steady workload, and replaced on a schedule. That is gentler than a drive in a desk-side enclosure that is power-cycled daily and harsher than one that idles most of the week. The rates rank models against each other under one consistent regime, which is exactly what makes them useful, and they are not a prediction for your drive.
Who it hits, and how hard
Home NAS owners should read the ranking rather than the absolute rate. A model that fails more in a datacentre will not fail less in a cupboard, but your power cycles, temperature range and workload are all different, so the absolute number will not transfer.
Anyone sizing an array should treat the rate as an input to redundancy, not a substitute for it. Our MTBF to AFR calculator turns a rate into expected failures across a given number of drives.
Buyers comparing two models should compare the confidence ranges, not the headline rates. Where the ranges overlap heavily, the data cannot separate the drives and you should decide on warranty, workload rating and price instead.
Anyone shopping on reliability alone is probably optimising the wrong variable. The difference between a good drive and a bad deployment is larger than the difference between two well-behaved models, and backups matter more than either.
What to do now
- Look up the exact model you are considering in our rate by model table, not the brand.
- Check the drive days column before trusting a rate; a small sample is not a result.
- Convert any rated MTBF on a datasheet into an annualized figure with our MTBF calculator.
- Confirm the recording technology with our model number decoder before putting a drive in an array.
- Compare makers only after reading the per-model table, using our brand comparison and its caveats.
- Keep backups regardless. RAID is not a backup and no failure rate changes that.
Outlook
Backblaze publishes quarterly, with an annual report early in the following year. We re-ingest when a new period appears and recompute rather than copying the published figure, so the method stays constant across periods. The quarterly table above shows whether the fleet rate has moved since the annual report.
We make no prediction about future failure rates. A drive model's rate in one year is a weak predictor of the next, because the population ages and the fleet mix changes.
Questions
What is an annualized failure rate?
The share of drives in a population that fail over a year of running, computed from observed drive-days rather than estimated from a manufacturer rating. The arithmetic is failures divided by drive-days, times 365, expressed as a percentage. It is a property of a fleet rather than a prediction for any one drive, which is the distinction most summaries blur. A 1% AFR does not mean your drive has a 1% chance of failing this year in your conditions; it means that across a large population running in Backblaze's conditions, roughly one drive in a hundred failed per year of operation.
Why do your numbers differ slightly from the Backblaze blog?
We compute from the raw daily snapshots rather than reproducing the published table, we apply our own reporting floor for small samples, and we exclude boot devices below 4 TB. Any difference comes from those three choices, all of which are stated on this page, and the underlying files are the same ones Backblaze publishes for anyone to check. Our 2025 fleet figure reproduces their published rate once boot devices are excluded, which is the evidence that the method agrees; per-model figures can differ slightly where period boundaries or inclusion rules diverge.
Does a 1% AFR mean my drive has a 1% chance of failing?
Roughly, over a year, if your drive runs in conditions like Backblaze's and is at a similar point in its life. Both of those caveats matter more than people expect. Failure risk is not flat over time: it is elevated in the first months as manufacturing defects surface, low through the middle of the useful life, and rises again at the end as components wear. A fleet average smooths all of that into one number. Your power cycles, ambient temperature and workload also differ from a datacentre's, so treat the figure as a ranking signal rather than a personal probability.
Should I buy the model with the lowest rate?
Not on that basis alone. The lowest-rate model in any year is often one with a modest sample or a short deployment, so the figure is partly an artefact of how long it has been running. The differences between well-behaved models are also much smaller than the difference between a good drive and a bad deployment: vibration, heat and power quality do more damage than model choice. Capacity, warranty length, workload rating and noise usually matter more to the outcome. Use the table to avoid the genuinely poor performers rather than to chase the best one.
Do these rates apply to a NAS at home?
Directionally, yes. A model that fails more in a datacentre is not going to fail less in your cupboard, so the ranking carries over even though the absolute rate does not. The differences that matter are power cycles, which a home NAS does far more of; ambient temperature, which is usually less stable at home; and workload, which is typically much lighter. Lighter workload helps you, more power cycling hurts, and the net effect is not something anyone can quantify from this data. Read the ordering, ignore the decimal places, and keep backups regardless.
