Why can't I access my NAS remotely?

Reaching a NAS from outside your home requires a deliberate remote-access path, and it breaks when any link in that path fails. Here's how to diagnose it and do it safely.

  1. Confirm the NAS is online and updated, with valid DNS and correct time.
  2. Check your chosen method is enabled (relay signed in, DDNS resolving, VPN server running).
  3. Test from outside — a phone on cellular data — to separate a NAS problem from your local network.
  4. Rule out ISP/CGNAT: some ISPs don't give a public IP, which breaks port forwarding; a relay or VPN service still works.

Do it securely

Prefer a VPN or the vendor relay over exposing the NAS's web interface directly to the internet. If you do forward ports, use HTTPS, strong unique passwords, two-factor authentication and keep the firmware patched. A NAS reachable from the internet is a target, so security hygiene matters — and remote access still doesn't replace a backup of the data.

Fix the connection, then protect the data

Once you can reach the NAS again, make sure the storage underneath it is sound — the right drives, healthy and backed up.
