We do not query these checkers for you. They are the makers' own systems, they rate-limit automated requests, and a cached answer from us could be wrong about your drive. Two things commonly surprise people: a warranty runs from the date of manufacture unless you register proof of purchase, so a drive that sat in a warehouse arrives with less cover than the full term; and an OEM or white-label drive pulled from an external enclosure is usually covered by the enclosure's warranty, not the bare-drive one.

In short

Every drive maker runs its own warranty lookup against the serial number on the drive label. This page explains each maker's serial format, where to find it, and what commonly shortens the cover you expect, then sends you to the right checker. We do not query those systems on your behalf.

The formula

warranty end = manufacture date + term
UNLESS you registered proof of purchase, in which case
warranty end = purchase date + term

term: typically 2 years consumer, 3 years NAS, 5 years Pro and enterprise

Why the warranty end date is rarely what you expect

The single most common surprise is that a drive warranty runs from the date of manufacture, not the date you bought it, unless you registered a proof of purchase. A drive that sat in a distributor's warehouse for six months arrives with six months already spent. On a five-year Pro drive that is a tenth of the cover gone before you powered it on, and nobody tells you at the till.

The fix is simple and takes a minute: register the receipt with the manufacturer as soon as the drive arrives. Every maker accepts proof of purchase to shift the start date, and almost nobody does it. If you are buying several drives for an array, do it for all of them while you still have one order confirmation covering the lot.

Reading a serial number

Each maker uses a different format. Western Digital serials are typically twelve alphanumeric characters, often beginning WX, WD, WM or WCC. Seagate uses eight characters, commonly starting W, Z or S. Toshiba varies by product line with no fixed prefix. The serial is printed on the top label as S/N, and SMART tools will read it from a drive already installed, which saves pulling the drive out of a running array.

Cases where the warranty is not what the model implies

A drive pulled from an external enclosure is covered by that product's warranty, which opening it ends, and it has no bare-drive warranty of its own. Drives sold as OEM through system builders are frequently covered by the builder rather than the drive maker. Recertified drives carry whatever the seller states, which is typically far shorter than a new drive's term and sometimes comes from the reseller rather than the manufacturer. In every one of those cases the model number will suggest a cover that does not apply, which is why the serial lookup is the only reliable answer.

Why we send you to the maker

We do not query the manufacturers' systems on your behalf. They are the makers' own tools, they rate-limit automated requests, and a cached answer from us could be wrong about your specific drive in a way you would have no way to detect. Pointing you at the authoritative source is the honest version of this page.

Questions

Why does my warranty end earlier than five years after I bought it?

Because it runs from the date of manufacture unless you registered a proof of purchase. A drive that sat in a distributor's warehouse for six months arrives with six months already spent. Register the receipt as soon as it arrives.

Can I check a warranty without the serial number?

No. The model number identifies the product line and its advertised term, but only the serial identifies your unit and its manufacture date. It is on the top label, and SMART tools will read it from a drive that is already installed.

Why do you not check the warranty for me?

The makers' lookups are theirs, they rate-limit automated requests, and a cached answer from us could be wrong about your specific drive. Sending you to the authoritative source is the honest version of this tool.

Is an OEM or white-label drive covered?

Usually not as a bare drive. A drive pulled from an external enclosure is covered by that product's warranty, which opening it ends. Drives sold as OEM through system builders are often covered by the builder rather than the drive maker.

Does a recertified drive carry a warranty?

It carries whatever the seller states, which is typically much shorter than a new drive's term and sometimes comes from the reseller rather than the manufacturer. Read the specific listing: this is the detail that varies most between sellers.
